A little bit about me….
I’m the author of the book Breastfeeding in Combat Boots and the Executive Director and Founder of this non-profit organization. I have nearly two decades of experience helping breastfeeding mothers and babies, and began my breastfeeding career while still on active duty in the US Navy. I served six years as an aircraft mechanic on F/A-18 Hornets and A-6 Intruders while on deployments overseas and stateside. During that time I gave birth to and breastfed my son for over a year before separating from the military with an Honorable discharge. I wrote the book due to the difficulties I experienced breastfeeding my son while on active duty, and my desire to help other military mothers be successful at breastfeeding so that they do NOT have to experience those difficulties; but instead can enjoy all that breastfeeding has to offer.
I have been working with breastfeeding mothers for over 19 years and have been an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) since 2006. I hold Bachelor of Science degrees in both Nursing and Maternal Child Health with specialization in Lactation. Currently, I at Madigan Army Medical Center as an IBCLC. In addition, I am a Retired La Leche League Leader. I maintain this website and Facebook page, write for various blogs and magazines and help active duty military mothers worldwide via email and Skype. I live in Graham, WA with my husband of 25 years, who is a Retired Chief Petty Officer of the US Navy, my three young adult children, four cats and a dog.
I have won numerous awards for my book, including Finalist in the Foreword Reviews Book of the Year awards, National Parenting Products Awards as an Honors level winner, and the Silver Medal award from the Military Writers Society of America. Please see Awards for further information.
I am an energetic and dynamic speaker who brings personal experience combined with evidence-based research to my presentations. I am an expert in the field of breastfeeding in the military, a topic that presents unique challenges and circumstances far different from those encountered by women in the civilian workforce. My motivation for speaking is to bring attention to a subject I feel is little understood, and yet affects many women. I have been a well-received speaker both locally and internationally. I have spoken at ILCA, AWHONN, LLL Conferences and at military bases internationally and nationwide. My presentations include those for professionals where I discuss how IBCLCs and other health care professionals can support the active duty military mother to be successful at breastfeeding. I also have presentations for active duty mothers that are suitable for general military training or safety stand-down presentations. Book signings can be arranged with advance notice. I have military ID and base access stickers.
